B.A.P Interview for Inkigayo Magazine

D.N.A HIM CHAN
The first up, let’s investigate the identity of agent Himchan! I’m ‘Himchan,’ the vocalist with the charming deep voice of the group. I like looking up good food blogs the most and I’m a research freak, so I tend to ‘search for styles’ on the search engines. My favorite style in fashion is “street fashion” which gives it a carefree feeling, but a dandy and simple style fits best with me so I often have a dilemma between reality and what’s beyond it. When I keep my mouth shut, they say I can’t look any more chic than I already do… but when I do open my mouth, I have the flaw of people’s reaction being “he can’t be like that” because it’s so opposite from my appearance. The things I say are at times the “answer” and so people think of me really intelligently and when they get to know me, they start to realize that I’m clumsier than the perceptions they had of me so they began to call me ‘heodang.’ (*T/N: The term ‘heodang’ means someone who is dense/dumb…I swear this was in the interview and pure coincidence that it’s my Tumblr url). I’m a college student majoring in playing the ‘double-headed drums’ in percussion of traditional Korean music at the Korea National University of the Arts. However, I’m currently taking a break from school so my drumming skills aren’t like before (sad). I’ll practice hard and show a good image of myself in playing the drums as well. The investigation of agent Himchan is finished. We’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
The smiling angel and genius bunny that sings well. What would happen if I was the bunny robot that came from planet Mato? First off, I’d probably be a bunny with high IQ. In comparison to before, my IQ has been decreasing but I think my head overall has a high IQ (laughs). Also, I like the ‘urban’ genre alongside R&B in music so I hope for my bunny to be a bunny that enjoys songs from artists like Urban Zakapa and Eric Benet. Lastly, a bunny that’s a ‘smiling angel’ since a bright smile is their striking charming point.

What I’m in charge of at the dorm. I’m in charge of being the ‘mom’ of the group. Since I was younger, I learned cooking when I would look over my family’s shoulders so I have a bit of cooking skills. With the ingredients we have in our dorm, I’ll cook for the other members often. I made a jjigae (stew) that was similar to soybean paste jjigae by tossing in ingredients like peppers, ssamjang (a mix of hot pepper paste & soybean paste), tofu, zucchini, etc. and the members said it was my best cooking and it made me happy to see them eat it so deliciously.

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: “Warrior is ____.” Describe the song in one phrase with character.
HC: In preparing for this album, I decided to really become a “Warrior.” I’m not sure if the viewers who watch our performances can feel it, but our main tackling point is to leave a strong and thick first impression like the children of darkness. With that meaning, our title song “Warrior” is exactly that in that it’s a song from warriors. Although the outer appearance of warriors can look somewhat violent, they for sure have a goal and revolt because of it. We want to be able to become a warrior that sings in having that goal and meaning.

Q: Is there a part in the lyrics for “Warrior” that you can relate to the most?
HC: I think the line “One by one, each one dies off and with the words that are like hell, my breath is hitching” reaches out to me the most. When living life, we often tell one another words that hurt each other or words that are fake but I think this line can help comfort those who have been hurt by those words.

Q: B.A.P, “idols with a charming twist.” Which member holds the greatest charms?
HC: I think Jongup holds the greatest charming twist because Jongup has a lot of muscles on his body but has a really innocent side to him which isn’t all that masculine, but he’s a guy who holds a lot of charms to him.

Q: If there was a moment that triggered you to become a singer or discover your musical talent, what was it and how did you come across it?
HC: I won an award in a children’s competition when I was younger and back then, it wasn’t that I wanted to pursue in music but more so that I enjoyed singing. Since then, I learned traditional music first and ended up declaring my major in Korean traditional music. After having come across various genres of music, I think the dream to become a singer came across me naturally.

Q: What was the moment when you felt, “Being a singer isn’t as easy as it looks!” while preparing for B.A.P’s album?
HC: In Korea’s music to the public, especially the idol market, singing skills are a given but other factors and talents are focused altogether so I have to emphasize on facial expressions, being able to dance well, having to sing, and looking at the camera (laughs). In having to focus on various things and not forget any of the factors in showing a stage where we have to perfect all areas is the hardest homework I think.

D.N.A YOUNG JAE
The fourth up, let’s investigate the identity of agent Youngjae! I like singing and I’m Youngjae who is in charge of being the lead vocalist in B.A.P. The first American music I came across was the title song ‘LOVE’ from Musiq Soulchild’s first album. Because of that one song, I got into American music and still enjoy listening to it to this day. I really like the anime “One Piece” and whenever I have time, I make sure to watch it! Even if I don’t get enough sleep, I have this divine talent of acting like I’m “not tired.” However, my tonic even washes away this divine talent! Our showcase that we held recently has been my biggest tonic during my days of busy schedules and lack of sleep. When we first stood on stage, we were at standby at a height of 4m above the stage and the lights were shut off then. In between the curtains, I was able to see 3,000 light sticks glow before the curtains and at that moment, I got goose bumps all over my body. The happiness then still gives me strength to this day which helps me forget my struggles despite promoting, to not lose my roots, and that I have to keep heading forward in knowing that this is just half of the beginning. The investigation of agent Youngjae’s identity is finished. We’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
The UP&DOWN rabbit that’s dressed in a clean suit. The overall color for my bunny is yellow and although the eyes are dazed~ the bunny is dressed down neatly in a suit. I wish that the bunny character would be a bunny that can belt out a charming note when singing. Because my blood type is AB, my emotions are really inconsistent so the bunny character would be full of playfulness, no? When it’s sad, it would be slouched and when it’s happy, it would hop up because it’s so excited~ I think a bunny character like that is most fitting with me. However, the most important thing is! Beside that bunny is a bunny friend like Daehyun who is good at taking jokes to be with it. Daehyun is the type of guy who’s really laid back in that he even takes all of my severe jokes when I’m feeling really happy.

What I’m in charge of at the dorm. I’m in charge of organizing in our team. Whenever there’s stuff sprawled out or the dorm is just messy in general, I’m in charge of cleaning it up and making everything even again. Sixty seconds is plenty to fix neatly all the papers, crackers, and remote sprawled out on the table. I’m pretty much a vacuum robot~

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: “Warrior is ____.” Describe the song in one phrase with character.
YJ: “Warrior is a song that makes me worried!” Normally, dry rehearsals take place early in the morning and my part is right after Yongguk hyung’s part and I tend to worry a lot over the condition of my voice since my part is really high pitched. The moment I open my eyes in the morning, I think, “Can I sing well today?!” I worry first and foremost about how I can maintain my voice since it’s important to do so, so I try not to use my voice as much as I can and before I go to bed, I either hang up a wet towel (*T/N: Hanging a wet towel in the room can help act as a humidifier) or I try to make my body in its most sensitive state so I can know the status of my voice right away.

Q: If there was a moment that triggered you to become a singer or discover your musical talent, what was it and how did you come across it?
YJ: It was when I was a second year in junior high and I sang with my friends for the talent show on our school trip. When I went on stage, our peers would clap and respond to our singing. That feeling exhilarated me and since then, I think I liked singing. I wasn’t the type to be born with a talent for singing nor did I discover my musical talent alone. It just came naturally in how I achieved my dreams of becoming a singer with my efforts.

Q: What’s one thing you can take pride in regarding how much you’ve matured in comparison to when you were preparing for B.A.P’s debut?
YJ: I can pretend to be less tired despite being tired. If one of the members shows signs of tiredness among the six, then everyone becomes tired. So that’s why when everyone’s tired, I smile brightly and create a fun atmosphere. If you look at it from that perspective, not only did I mature but my dongsengs did as well.

D.N.A ZELO
Lastly! The sixth member up, let’s investigate the identity of agent Zelo! I’m the magnae Zelo who’s in charge of the group’s rap and choreography. I’m currently a student but due to it being break, I’m resting and my hobbies are beat boxing, listening to music, and skateboarding. Lately, I’ve been enjoying listening to Lil Wayne’s “New Boys” and lately, I’ve been into the song “Far Away” by Tyga as I’ve been putting it on repeat every day. I’m into fashion so I like clothes and revamping accessories as I’m an expert at handcrafting things. Although my skills are lacking as of right now, I think I’ll be able to lead a trend in creating lots of ‘IT ITEMS’ in the future. Also, I’ve been practicing my facial expressions so I’ve picked up the habit of looking at the mirror on the side when having conversations with others. Although I’m the magnae of the team, I’m the tallest and because of that, I’m trying hard to stop my puberty as best as I can. Despite my tall height however, I’m in charge of the team’s aegyo having being surrounded by hyungs. The hyungs baby me so lately I’m feeling like I’m getting younger. Ah! I’m also an expert at talking to myself and talking in my sleep. The moment I wake up in the morning, my morning greeting from the hyungs are, “Your sleep talking today was daebak.” I want to stop sleep talking now. the investigation of agent Zelo is finished. We’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
The quick bunny that’s on a booster. If I were able to create my own bunny character, I would put boosters on the shoes of my bunny. Like a rocket, I want to go flying off~ If that’s too difficult, I’ll have the bunny carry a skateboard with him at all times. More than anyone, a bunny who is exactly fast! Also, I hope for the bunny to be able to be exact in rapping fast as well. There! Lastly, I think it’ll be cute to make dimples on both cheeks of the bunny.
What I’m in charge of at the dorm. I’m in charge of doing the laundry. Despite being tired, I’m worried that there will be no clothes if the laundry piles up so I purposely do laundry out in our veranda. (The hyungs were worried about you). Ah, really? (Daehyun and Jongup said the magnae is suffering). Ah! Hearing these things make me really happy. Whenever the hyungs worry rather than order me to do stuff, I really like hearing the hyungs tell me in a caring voice, “Sorry Zelo~ But can you do this for me?” or hearing them say the one word “Thanks!” I’ll work harder to hear these things more often.

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: Is there a part in the lyrics for “Warrior” that you can relate to the most?
Z: There’s a line that has the words “a fresh badge” and I really like that line the most. I think it’s a meaningful lyric in regards to B.A.P’s arrival which is different from others in critiquing society. A fresh badge that represents B.A.P who’s different from others! In promoting efficiently, I want to become a group that’s acknowledged by the public.

Q: If there was a moment that triggered you to become a singer or discover your musical talent, what was it and how did you come across it?
Z: I used to do awkward beat boxing and dance alone since I was younger. Wherever I went, my parents made me rap. I have the personality where if I’m with my family and relatives, I tend to showcase my talents so I rapped a lot in front of my family or other people since I was younger.

Q: What’s one thing you can take pride in regarding how much you’ve matured in comparison to when you were preparing for B.A.P’s debut?
Z: It’s probably when I have conversations with the hyungs. Normally, you would level with the age group when conversing with them but sometimes, I’d think to myself, “Huh? You know how to say things like that too?” which surprises me in that I’m able to converse on their level. I don’t show my shocked state but I do surprise myself a lot. In discovering that side of myself, I think the way I think has matured a lot compared to before.

D.N.A. JONG UP
The 5th up, we’ll investigate the identity of our new agent, Jongup! Hello, I’m Jongup, who is in charge of B.A.P’s vocal and choreography. My charming point is dancing on stage I think. I like various types of dancing like popping, bboying, and other street dancing and I’m confident to perform them. I normally like listening to songs from “Chris Brown.” Do you know how much I like Chris Brown? I never go without a day in going over music videos of musicians on my iPod. When seeing the awesome performances of music videos from international artists, I often get surprised. I want to go to America myself to see these performances with my own two eyes. It hasn’t been long since “Warrior” was released and I don’t know what to do in receiving all of this love. I toss and turn at night in thinking that I have to show an even better image of myself and I’m working hard on practicing, so anticipate lots for me. I tend to be competitive so I can never forgive myself for going back on my promise to myself! Investigation of agent Jongup is finished! I’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
The rabbit whose eye smiles are charming and has wings attached. What would happen if I become the robot bunny from planet Mato? I’ve always had this dream of flying in the sky one day so I wish I can have wings. Also, I wish for my rabbit to have round eyes and a smiling face since my character’s face is a bit scrunched in giving it a whole new look and making a ‘bunny with a twist.’

What I’m in charge of at the dorm. My mother owns a restaurant so I’ve always done a lot of dish washing since I was younger, so I’m in charge of dish washing at our dorm. However, there are times I sleep because I’m tired and Yongguk hyung does it for me without me knowing it or even the house chores in general which I’m always grateful for.

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: What point in the choreography should we be aware of for the title song “Warrior”?
JU: Director Park Sanghyun of “Play” was in charge of our choreography and “stomp” dance, which is considered the climax of this performance, is the main point. The sounds of our feet rolling and our claps alongside our deep breaths, it’s a performance different than the average idols’ so I wish for everyone to watch it with much attention. You’ll probably think of it as a ‘non-verbal performance’ in which it’s just our body gestures that make the beat.

Q: All the members of B.A.P are being critiqued as “charming idols with a twist” meaning that you all can’t be judged just by looks. Who is the most charming in the group?
JU: I’m jealous of Zelo’s innocence and his expressional ways. Because he’s able to express how he feels right away, we think it’s really cute yet funny. There are a lot of times when Zelo falls asleep first in waiting in line to wash up and when we wake him up, he would say these odd things as if he were speaking a foreign language. He would wash up after having woken up, then we would put him back to bed. Sometimes, Yongguk hyung would joke around in telling him to hurry and wake up and Zelo would be so scared that he’s stand up so straight which is so cute to see.

Q: What was the first trigger to motivate you to become a singer if there were any, and how did you first come across your musical talent?
JU: In my first year of junior high, we were deciding on our specialties and my close friend chose “dance” to go into and I chose “cross-stitch” which was really unrelated. At first, I used to just wait for my friend in the practice room and I transitioned into practicing with him and since then, I’ve fallen for the charms of dancing. While being in the school dance club, we went to competitions also and were even awarded, which fueled my greed for wanting to do better. That friend of mine is in a different crew now and is still dancing.

Q: What was the moment when you felt, “Being a singer isn’t as easy as it looks!” while preparing for B.A.P’s album?
JU: When practicing didn’t go the way I wanted it to. During the time I was in a slump, I really thought that being a singer wasn’t all that easy as it appears. If there’s a cure to treating a slump, my personal method is to “think in a different way.” Rather than being so sucked into one thing, I try to look for other genres and am very forward about finding other things. If not, I also just don’t think of anything in emptying my heart and mind which I find as an effective method to treating a slump.

D.N.A. DAE HYUN
Third up is in finding out the identity of agent Daehyun! I was from Busan, but moved to Seoul and I am the lead vocalist Jung Daehyun of B.A.P. I’m very strong about my appetite so I like trying all kinds of food and enjoying their tastes. Thankfully though, I’m not the type to gain it all back. I don’t really know how to respond when fans give me gifts lately, so I just turn red. I think I’m the generic blood type A that can’t really express their feelings broadly. That’s why I’ve been taking interest lately in the “Becoming closer with fans” project. I want to approach fans a bit closer like friends and the solution Himchan hyung knows well, so I’m hoping to learn from him. Discovering the identity of agent Daehyun has been complete; we’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
A bunny with crazy baby fat and a sense of humor beyond what a musician would have. I hope that I can become a bunny of looks that appears cute with the thick baby fat under my eyes. Next, I want the bunny to hold a microphone is the next thing. And I hope to either hang a guitar around him or place him in front of a piano; I think that will be a character that reflects me perfectly. Sometimes, I tend to say nonsensical jokes and that’s why this bunny often appears awkward, but I hope it can be a humorous bunny that surpasses the humor of a comedian.

The mission I’m in charge of in the dorm. The magnae must be in so much difficulty. The veranda is cold, so…I’m in charge of (cleaning up) the restroom and I like taking out the trash, so I think that’s comfortable for me. Trash lying around catches my eye when I get home, so I discovered my neat personality when I started living in a dorm as I noticed these things in comparison to before when I never really noticed.

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: If you can fill in the blank: “Warrior is ______.” Fill in the blank as your introduction for your song in one word.
DH: “warrior is a marathon.” If I can explain a little further in detail, I’ll say that it’s the biggest favor returned to me in my life. A marathon is 42,195km in length and like the feeling of a long marathon, I prepared and practiced for this album. Now, like a runner standing at the starting point, the song “Warrior” holds the meaning in marking the starting point of B.A.P.

Q: Do you have a part in the title song “Warrior” in which you can relate to the most?
DH: In my part at the end, there’s a line that says “He won’t be hidden under the sky and even if he hides, he’ll kneel before the truth.” Whenever I sing that part, I feel this bliss in that no matter how much one hides, the truth will always be revealed in the end and I’m happy that I can deliver a message that holds hope.

Q: Was there a period of time that motivated you provoking your dreams of becoming a singer and during what period of time did you figure your talents in music?
DH: When I was in middle school, I gained a habit of practicing singing at the karaoke after school. Coincidentally, I happened to go to a karaoke with my relatives during the holidays and they complimented me in saying, “You can be a singer!” Since then, I’ve been recommended to attend a music academy and raised my dreams of becoming a singer then on.

Q: Tell us a fun episode in the dorm.
DH: I don’t sleep in, so I wake up early and when I come out of the shower after having woken up the members, I hear these strange alien sounds. The members tend to have severe sleeping habits in that when they talk in their sleep, it’s as if they’re speaking to one another but out of all of them, magnae Zelo seems to be really tired as he does it often. Whenever he does, I’d tell him, “Zelo~ You have to wake up” and he’d start saying random things to me in his sleep as a response. Sometimes, the hyungs tease him in telling him, “Zelo~ It’s already dinner! We have to go out” and he’ll respond as, “It’s already dinner? Alright.” Sometimes, he’ll run out to the front door if we tell him his parents are here. Whatever we tell him in his sleepy state, he’ll believe us 100% (laughs).

D.N.A. BANG YONG GUK
Second up, time to find out about the identity of agent Bang Yongguk! Hello, this is B.A.P’s leader, member, and music producer of the group, Bang Yongguk. I participated in the composing for all the tracks in this album and although I’m not a subtle guy in a normal basis, I feel that another side of Bang Yongguk rises when I stand on stage. In wanting to show a perfect stage performance, I become sensitive at the littlest things of if I were to get even a small movement (in a choreography) incorrect. I tend to take interest in news related to politics and economy considering that I like songs that discuss society or have deep meanings to them. There are times when I feel like a dad because the youngest Zelo doesn’t really know much about politics or the economy. Lately, I’ve been having fun with checking the member count for the fan café. I lurk on the fan café the most and even look into the pictures the fans upload of themselves as no one knows how many times I’ve held myself back from leaving replies on fan café posts as well. I’m infamous among the fans for being chic and quiet, but don’t let it get in the way in your perception of me to getting closer. Although I don’t really hold a friendly personality, it makes me want to approach the fans with a smile all the more, but I just can’t do it no matter how much I desire. Being the eldest as well as the leader, I’ve been strong in terms of my responsibility aspect lately so I’m charging up my charisma even today to show my strong hyung image. We’ll continue to become an improving B.A.P, so look out for us with love. Completion of finding out the identity of agent Bang Yongguk; we’ll work hard, yes sir!

MATO# RABBIT
A rabbit holding a gun and having a surprisingly unexpected voice with its ears raised. In the group, I have a strong and rough character, so I think that’s why my bunny holds a gun. Although it’s unimaginable for a cute bunny to hold a gun, I think it’ll suit it well. Also, I think I’m the bunny that’s very good at listening and sensitive to sound, so that must be the reason why my ears are bigger, right? Lastly, I think a charming bunny has been born in that despite being a bunny, it holds a husky voice when speaking.

B.A.P# FIRST SINGLE ALBUM
Q: If you can fill in the blank: “Warrior is ______.” Fill in the blank as your introduction for your song in one word.
BYG: “Warrior is a message.” In the song emphasizing our dance, facial expressions, outfits, and everything else in a masculine aspect, often times people tend to stray away from the true message of the song. We hope that you can attentively listen to the message the song is trying to deliver.

Q: Do you have a part in the title song “Warrior” in which you can relate to the most?
BYG: I focused a lot when working on the rap lyrics for Zelo’s part and if there are difficult words in his rap lyrics in being such a young kid, then it’s hard to deliver his image clearly. There’s the line, “Do you hear my words making the heart cry?” shows the complaint of social irregularities and follows up with the next line of “I’m speaking of irregularities and you’re getting angry, right?” I think that not only are the lyrics provoking, but it also fits perfectly according to his age I think that’s the reason why I like this part the most.

Q: Was there a period of time that motivated you provoking your dreams of becoming a singer and during what period of time did you figure your talents in music?
BYG: I composed a song in my first year off middle school and uploaded it on an online community site for the first time and I didn’t really think much of it when I uploaded it, but the responses I received were good so it made me think, “Do I…have a musical talent?” Since then, I’ve constantly rapped and eventually made my debut.

Q: Now you’re a rookie that just made its debut! What are the many worries you may have as of lately?
BYG: Although it may sound like I’m full of myself, but I’m worried about the next album already. This album, from the concept to the characters, were all created in the entirety of the staff through many meetings and we don’t necessarily have the leisure we do with this upcoming album, so I’m worried that it may be incomplete in comparison to our first.

Q: If you can choose the greatest music or musician that made you grow the most, what or who would it be?
BYG: I listened to the “Illmatic” album from Nas in middle school for the first time and I didn’t really have a big response to it but when I turned 21, when I am in the stage where I think a lot, the lyrics to the rap really appealed to me. In listening and understanding carefully to the lifestyle of that person, I gained a lot of inspiration musically. I used to like raps that were strong in expressing one’s self before, but now I like lyrics to raps that tend to hold meanings tying to society.
